Everything about Parabens and Phenoxyethanol

Everything about Parabens and PhenoxyethanolPhenoxyethanol

* A preservative

* Also known as Ethylene Glycol Monophenyl Ether

* Please read TIA’s articles on What Is It: Phenoxyethanol and Is It Safe? and The FDA’s Warning on Phenoxyethanol

* Please read TIA’s other articles on What Is It: Preservatives and Parabens and Are They Safe? and What Is It: Natural Preservative Alternatives to Phenoxyethanol and Parabens
Functions:

Phenoxyethanol, also known as Ethylene Glycol Monophenyl Ether, is a glycol ether and bactericide (that functions as a disinfectant, antiseptic or antibiotic) that is primarily used as a preservative in cosmetics and beauty products. It is also seen as a fragrance additive, a fixative for perfumes, an insect repellent ingredient in sunscreens, a topical antiseptic ingredient, and solvent (Wikipedia).

Phenoxyethanol has become a widely used ingredient because of its previously positive reputation as a relatively gentle preservative that is considered non-irritating; it is also one of the few preservatives that does not release formaldehyde. The CIR approves it for use and it is most often used as a preservative because of its ability to kill bacteria and stabilize formulas, extending their shelf life and making them safe for use (Source).

Everything about Parabens and Phenoxyethanol

Safety Measures/Side Effects:

However. Studies have shown that Phenoxyethanol can be an extreme irritant to the eyes and skin, and can even cause blistering; it is hazardous in the case of ingestion and inhalation as well. The Cosmetic Database rates it as a moderate hazard and notes cancer, allergic reactions, skin, eye and lung irritation, organ and neurotoxicity as possible effects of using products containing Phenoxyethanol. It has shown effects on sensory organs even at low doses, and brain and nervous systems at moderate doses in animals, and causes cell mutation.

According to research, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) data sheets show “chromosomal changes and genetic mutation effects in testing as well as testicular atrophy and reproductive damage in mice.”

Parabens

Parabens get a bad rap. Some products proclaim themselves paraben-free. But are they really that bad and isn’t the stuff that they prevent (the formation of nasty bacterias) potentially more harmful? What about the alternatives? Do they work and are they safer?

Parabens are preservatives and they are incredibly ubiquitous; you will find them in cosmetics and all manner of hair care products. They are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and common parabens include: methylparaben (which can occur naturally in blueberries), propylparaben, butylparaben. Less common are isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben and benzylparaben.

The fuss started when a study linked parabens in deodorant to breast cancer. Because parabens mimic human estrogen and it is known that estrogen stimulates cancer, the link seemed plausible. The study has since been discredited and the American Cancer Society has concluded that there is no scientific evidence of parabens increasing breast cancer risk.

So if parabens are by and large not carcinogenic, what’s not to like? Allergies to individual parabens are rare, but there is a high incidence of cross-reaction so a combination of parabens in one product increases the liklihood of a reaction. Many cosmetic and hair products contain up to four or five parabens.

Paraben Safety

In 1984, 2003, and 2005 the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), an industry-sponsored organization which reviews cosmetic ingredient safety and publishes its results in open, peer-reviewed literature, investigated the safety of parabens.  All three times the CIR concluded that parabens were safe as long as they did not constitute more than 25% of a product’s content.  Once again let me point out that parabens are found in levels ranging from 0.01% to 0.3% in skincare products.  Additionally, the FDA has determined that parabens are safe for use in cosmetic products.

How To Determine If The Product You Have Has Parabens

Parabens are actually very easy to identify on your skincare product label since they all end with “paraben”.  You’ll find them at the very bottom of the list of ingredients.  Skincare products that are paraben-free usually list that somewhere on the front of their label.  If you do choose to go the paraben free route keep in mind that these products will spoil quicker than those with chemical preservatives in them.  Look for expiration dates, and if the product doesn’t have an expiration date call the manufacturer (by law the manufacturer’s phone number must be on the label) to find out the product’s shelf life.

See..the stuff found in almost everything related to makeup and beauty..is so harmful 🙁

MRP: US$ 37.00 for 50ml

I have the Evening Light which is a little dark for my skin..the Day Light would have worked better. I mix this with a lighter foundation or top it up with a lighter powder if used as it is…but even if used on its own..it does not appear too dark and settles with the natural skin tone.

It has a very light floral kinda smell which I like..feels very very light on the skin..since its water based..I love that it feels so light..you never feel like you have anything on the skin..

I love their trademark half cylindrical and half flat the base bottle..it has a flip cap on top..with a small opening for the product to come out..

Pros:

1. Feels very light on skin.
2. Adjusts to the natural skin tone.
3. Since it is water based..it would suit all skin types.
4. Different and nice packaging.
5. Natural and Organic Ingredients.
6. Parabens and chemical free.
7. Stays for a good 6-7 hours.
8. Has a light floral smell.

Cons:

1. Only three shades available.
2. Expensive.
3. Availability is an issue.

Overall I have no cons with the texture and formula..its one of the best Tinted Moisturisers I have tried..completely loved the water based formula..and light feel..but it sure is expensive for a TM..and availability is an issue too..

Rating:

Quality: 4.5/5
Value for money: 3.5/5
Availability: 3.5/5

Overall Rating: 4/5

Would I buy it again: Would love to..

P.S: Product sent by brand for review but it has not affected my opinion.

How to use Dry Shampoos

This post brought to you by TRESemmé. All opinions are 100% mine.

Dry Shampoos are such a boon when you do not have time or are in a location where washing hair is not so feasible..The correct method of using Dry Shampoos is..

– Do shake vigorously before use and in between spray bursts for best results.

– Do lift sections of dry hair and spray lightly at roots

– Do spray in short bursts, holding 8-12 inches from head

– Don’t spray it like hair spray (all over and continuously)

– Do leave in for 1-2 minutes.

– Do use fingertips or a brush to distribute product evenly

– If clogging occurs, remove nozzle and rinse the nozzle under warm water, then reattach.

There are different brands of Dry Shampoos available..and Tresemme is one of them..

When I first saw this shampoo in the catalog along with the other two shampoos..i.e Cotton and Wild rose Protecting and White Nettle and Papaya Anti Dandruff 2 in 1 Shampoo plus Conditioner. I loved the way it was described and it sounded too good. So I ordered it and then what happened read on…
What does the Company claim : Inspire your dry hair with a lavish, indulgent shampoo with exquisite natural extracts of coconut oil and rice milk to hydrate, nurture and condition.
A mild and gentle shampoo to effectively cleanse and nourish hair.

It is white in color and is runny. It has a very unpleasant strong coconuty smell.
Cons :

1.The smell !! It has a very strong coconut smell which is similar to a cheap coconut toffee…may be similar to that small red kismi toffee :p
2. It does not lather.
3. It does not remove oil.
4. t did nothing to my hair except giving it a limp feeling.
5. Has SLS and loads of other chemicals.
Pros :

1.   The bottle is good with a tight enough flip cap. I would re-use this to store something else while travelling.

War of Face Washes- Himalaya v Pond’s v Fabindia and my HG

War of Face Washes- Himalaya v Pond’s v Fabindia

Ok..here is a quick comparision of the face washes I have tried. Precisely its Himalaya Purifying Neem Face wash (which I am using from last 4-5 years and yes you are right…this is my HG), Pond’s White Beauty Daily Spotless Lightening Facial Foam and Fabindia Tea Tree Face wash.

Lets start with Himalaya Purifying Neem…there is also a Foaming one in this which comes in a pump dispenser..I have tried that 1-2 times..but I feel this one is better and stick to it…

It is a light green color gel and it says prevents pimples and purifies skin in all skin types..

What the Company claims-A soap-free herbal formulation that gently removes impurities and prevents pimples. Enriched with Neem, well known for its anti-bacterial property that kills problem-causing bacteria, and Turmeric, which effectively controls acne and pimples. Use regularly for clear, soft, and pimple-free skin.

Directions for use-Moisten face, apply a small quantity of Purifying Neem Face Wash and gently work up lather with a circular motion. Wash off and pat dry. Use twice daily. Followup with Himalaya Herbals Face Moisutrizing Lotion.Use Himalaya Herbals Neem Face Pack once a week to rejuvenate and revitalize your facial skin.

MRP- Rs. 45 for 50 ml and Rs 70 for 100 ml (The Foaming one is for Rs 150 for 150 ml)

Ingredients : Exts. Nimba, Haridra
Inactives: Phenoxyethanol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate

Pros :
1. It leaves my skin squeaky clean without any dryness or stretchy feeling.
2. Using this regularly has helped reduce break outs.
3. It is very mild and gentle.
4. I love the refreshing smell and it wakes me up instantly.
5. I trust Himalaya with their products and it mentions all the ingredients.
6. The 45 ml tube is travel friendly.
7. Its cheap and a good value for money.

Cons :
1. The flip tube cap is a bit tight.

Umm…no other cons..I guess… I love it too much and come back to it always..I am going to buy this forever..but I do try other face washes in between.

Rating- 4.5/5

Would I buy it again- Yes yes….forever

Now the Pond’s White Beauty Daily Spotless Lightening Facial Foam…It is a  white creamy facewash…and just a bit is required as it foams a lot…it has Pro Vitamin B3

What the Company claims- Cleanses deeply for glowing and brighter skin. This gentle foam deeply cleanses and brightens skin, transforming your complexion to a radiant look you have always wanted. The foams unique formula reduces dullness and brightens skin, while washing away old and weary, sallow skin cells. Skin feels soft, smooth and sparkling clean.

Directions for use – Wet your face. Apply to face and neck and gently massage. Rinse off.

MRP – Rs 60 for 50 gm

Ingredients: Myristic Acid, Gylcerin, Water, Propylene Glycol, Potassium Hydroxide, Palmitic Acid n Stearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Glycol Distearate, Decyl Glucoside, Glyceryl Stearate, Polyquaternium-7, Niacinamide, DMDM Hydantoin n Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Perfume, Disodium Edta.

1. It does lighten the skin a bit and gives that radiant glow.
2. A little goes a long way.
3. It is travel friendly.
4. It is cheap.
5. Smells nice.

Cons :
1. It is very drying…dry skinned beauties stay far away from this.
2. It gives that stretchy feeling and now I use it only occasionally to finish it off.

Rating- 3/5

Would I buy it again- No

And lastly Fabindia Tea Tree Face Wash…its a transparent gel…with a strong tea tree smell. Tea tree oil is supposed to be very good for oily skin, pimples, blemishes, uneven skin tone, body odour, dandruff, etc

What the Company claims-  An antiseptic face wash ideal for oily skin, containing tea tree oil and turmeric extract. Daily use removes excess sebum reducing acne and pimples.

Pros :
1. I think it would be the best face wash for oily skinned people prone to acne or pimples.
2. Its not drying.
3. It leaves you squeaky clean and refreshed and even removes basic makeup.

Cons :
1. The smell…strong tea tree oil smell.
2. Its runny..so you have to be careful with this.
3. Can be drying if used more than once a day even for oily skinned.
4. The price considering it comes in a huge tube. They should come out with a smaller size.
5. It is not travel friendly as its a big tube.
6. It leaves a slippery feeling behind.

Though I have combination skin.. I use it occasionally whenever I break out..and it does help in that.I like most of the Fabindia products as they are quite effective.

Rating- 3/5

Would I buy it again- May be..if in case I break out or something.

So overall I am quite happy with my HG..my Himalaya Neem for my daily use.

P.S : I went for shopping at Pantaloons…got 4 T shirts and 1 nice pair of earrings..they are in gold color..and perfect for traditional wear..love them..

So which is your HG face wash ? And which do you like among these three ??
