Acne Scars – Causes, Prevention Measures and Home Remedies

By Archana

Hi all,

After many product reviews, I am back with an informative post today. Acne is one common skin condition that many people suffer from. Though it mostly occurs in teenagers, many adults too face it. In today’s post, I will explain the common causes for acne, prevention measures and some home remedies to cure acne scars.

What causes acne?

The four main reasons for acne are:

* Excessive oil production
* Dead skin cells
* Clogged pores
* Bacteria

When our body secretes excess sebum/oil, they build up in the hair follicles and form a soft plug, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive in. This bacterial infection causes inflammation eventually leading to pimples. Whiteheads and blackheads too are actually clogged pores with bacteria and oil.

Some factors like hormonal imbalance, certain foods, stress, etc can trigger or aggravate the acne conditions.

How to prevent the occurrence of acne?

It’s always better to prevent the occurrence of acne in the first place with some good skin care routine.

* Keep your face clean by washing your face atleast twice a day to remove impurities, dead skin cells and extra oil.
* Use a separate towel for your face.
* Change your pillow covers and bedsheets weekly.
* Avoid or limit the intake of deep-fried foods, dairy products, sugar, salty snacks and junk food.
* Avoid using oils, gels and fragrances on your hair.
* Wash your hair often as oily hair can add to the oil on your face.

Home remedies for acne scars:

When a pimple occurs, it can leave behind marks and scars. Though there are many pigmentation creams and anti-acne gels available in the market, home remedies are always more effective and with no side effects. Only thing, they need to be followed diligently for atleast two weeks to see improvement. Here is a list of easy remedies at home to cure acne scars:

Lemon mask for acne scars:

* Lemon juice – 1 tbsp
* Honey – 1tbsp
* Milk – 2 tbsp
* Rose water – 1 tbsp

Mix all the above together and using a cotton wool apply on the acne scars. Leave on for 15 minutes and wash off. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent which helps lighten the scars. The rose water helps to soothe the tingling sensation caused due to lemon.

Aloe vera gel for acne scars:

Extract fresh aloe vera gel from the plant and apply on face. You can leave it overnight. Do it regularly for two weeks for the acne scars to fade. Aloe vera not only soothes inflammation but also helps in regenerating damaged tissues and speeds up the healing process.

Cucumber and gram flour face pack for acne scars:

* Half a cucumber
* Gram flour – 2 tbsp
* Turmeric powder – 1 tbsp

Blend the cucumber into a smooth paste. Add the gram flour and turmeric powder and apply as a face pack. Leave for 20-25 minutes and then wash off. This treatment is good for sensitive skin also to get rid of acne scars.

Potato and tomato mask for acne scars:

* Half a potato
* Half a tomato
* Honey – 1 tbsp

Grate the potato and extract the juice from it. Blend the tomato into a fine paste. Add the potato juice and a teaspoon of honey. Apply this mix all over your face and wash off after 15 minutes. Tomatoes contain the enzyme lycopene which help to lighten pimple marks. Potatoes also have skin lightening and bleaching properties.

Cinnamon and honey mask for acne scars:

Add half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to one teaspoon of honey and apply on your acne scars. Leave it for an hour and then wash off. This mixture has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which is effective in treating the acne.

Tea tree oil for acne scars:

This is a proven remedy for reducing acne scars. Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral essential oil. Just dilute some tea tree essential oil in water and apply this solution on your acne scars everyday. Leave it overnight. Follow it regularly to see visible reduction in scars and blemishes.

Apple cider vinegar for acne scars:

ACV is a natural astringent and balances the pH level of your skin. It is effective in the treatment of acne too. Mix 1 part of apple cider vinegar with 1 part of water and 1 teaspoon of honey. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply on scars. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash off. Do this once daily.

Sandalwood and orange face pack for acne scars:

* Sandalwood powder – 2 tbsp
* Orange peel powder – 2 tbsp
* Rose water – 2 tbsp

Mix all the above into a fine paste and apply as a face pack. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash off. According to Ayurveda, sandalwood is a effective soothing and cooling agent to treat skin inflammations. Orange peel powder helps to lighten the marks.

So these are some of the home remedies you can follow to cure acne scars, pimple marks and blemishes.

Editor’s Note: This was a really well written post Archana and the remedies are fab. I think I always stick to Aloe Vera Gel and the fuller’s earth, sandalwood mix. I will surely try the other home remedies mentioned by you.

Which ones have you tried? Share your experiences below.

Essence XXXL Long-Lasting Lip Gloss Matt Effect Velvet Rose Review, Swatches

Essence XXXL Long-Lasting Lip Gloss Matt Effect Velvet Rose Review, Swatches

By Ishleen

Hello girlies!

Starting this post with a quick question! Apart from the conventional Indian market brands, have you tried any German based brands, and if yes, were there any that you fell madly, deeply, strongly in love with? Well, if someone asked me this, I would scream at the top of my lungs that I am heads-over-heel sin love with Essence! And I am so thankful to Indian markets for having accepted this cute little brand so warmly and making it available for us Indian makeup addicts! I mean they are so affordable, such good quality and have such a vast range of products that you just cannot ignore it!

So today I am reviewing one of my most beloved lip creams from the house of Essence!

Product Description: Essence describes this gorgeous artefact in the following expression. “Matt=a must! If you love this lip trend, the velvety-matt, long-lasting lip glosses are ideal for you! The light, mousse-like texture lasts on your lips for several hours without drying them out. Particularly easy to apply, thanks to the flat applicator.”

And man, oh man! Did they exaggerate even once while writing their product claims? I am afraid, not! Ok, agreed that the lip creams do not give the matte effect that the claim talks about, but apart from that—the product is a treat to have!

MRP: Rs.279/- for 4.5ml (BUY HERE)

Packaging, price and Quantity!

The lip creams come in nice long cylindrical tube like packaging which are made of see-through material which makes the shade selection a breeze if you have more than a single shade form the line! Nothing too fancy about the packaging, tbh! Just a regular lip gloss kind of packaging but the fragrance of the product—oh god! I cannot even begin to start praising the sweet vanilla-ish fragrance that this lip cream has! I mean, for 279 bucks you get 4.5 ml of heavenly scented goodness! Trust me I’ll purchase it again and again for the fragrance alone! It is such a mood up lifter, truly!

Shade!

I prefer my lip products very subtle and under stated, and did this particular shade did not let me down even once! On first look (and application) it seemed a bit too light for me and most warm Indian skin tones, but the shade is so workable and can be used as a top-up shade for nude lipsticks which can make the lips look all the more plump and luscious kind of soft! To be honest, the shade is a pale pink with warm undertones and can be used as a perfect nude for lighter skin tones—but for women of colour it can be worked up to lighten your blood lipsticks or to intensify a nude shade!

Texture and Finish of the lip cream!

If you have ever known a soft-matte finish lip cream which is so velvety to apply and feels as if it was whipped up especially to make your lips look luscious—you know what exactly XXXL Long Lasting feels on the lips! The texture literally feels velvety and has a whipped up, almost airy-light-weight formula! One let down to this lip product is that it is not matte—not at all matte! Ok, I can give it a pass by calling soft-matte, almost velvety finish but matte? Not really!

Pigmentation, Coverage and Staying Power!

Not the most pigmented of the lot, but the lip cream is sort of medium coverage! The good point is that it is totally buildable, so there are chances that pigmented lips can give this a try! Though I would recommend using a deep nude lip liner or any lipstick underneath to make the shade work for deeper Indian skin tones!

Staying Power!

To be honest, the lack of mattifying effect, it does transfer very easily so it does not stay put for a very long time! But it can easily get through 3-4 hours with light snacks and drinking (with straw, of course)! The best part is that it fades very evenly, and does not crumble or get accumulated in the corners of the mouth! So this is a win-win! <3

Pros:

Creamy, air-whipped texture
Velvety matte finish
Medium coverage
Stays for 3-4 hours
Makes the lips look lusciously soft and plump
Nice packaging and flat applicator

Cons:

Not the most pigmented
A little pale for Indian skin tones

Rating: 4.8/5

Would I recommend: Definitely yes! If not this particular shade then at least try some other one, but definitely do! The texture and quality is really amazing!

Editor’s Note: I have this one in the shade ‘Silky Red’ and love it, although would have loved better staying power coz I have tried numerous matte lip creams with better staying power later, but for the price it’s really nice. Well reviewed Ishleen 🙂

Kryolan TV Paint Stick Foundation Review, Swatches

Kryolan TV Paint Stick Foundation Review, Swatches

By Sanchita

INTRODUCTION – I have heard so much about Kryolan from every other MUAs I have met that I had to try out this brand. One thing that draws me closer to this is the innumerable shades that they offer. Getting the perfect match for a foundation and concealer is like a dream come true for every girl (Okhay! I exaggerated that :P) I do not have such skin issues but I have worst possible dark circles that surely needs to be corrected and concealed well. Last week I paid a visit to the store and picked up the TV Paint Stick Foundation in the shade FS 28.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION – Successfully proven cream make-up in stick form. The special base of TV Paint Stick allows a gentle make-up application that provides effective covering at the same time. The Kryolan assortment of more than 250 color nuances for selection is truly extraordinary – which makes this preparation indispensable for stage, film, TV, video work and more.

PRICE – 1000 INR for 25g

Ingredients:

MY REVIEW

Packaging – The Kryolan TV Paint Stick Foundation comes in a dull silver and grey packaging. It has a screw cap and the foundation is in the form of a stick which needs to be twisted up like a lipstick. The packaging is surely efficient but if I have to go for the looks, I am not much impressed. The hygiene factor is also there as you have to use fingers every time. The printed mask reminds me of ‘V for Vendetta’ which surely isn’t something I want on my makeup. Nevertheless, it is light weight and completely travel friendly. The foundation has a weird smell but nothing to put you off completely. It isn’t very overpowering as well so I wouldn’t complain much.

Shade – Coming the shade, it is FS 21. They have countless shades so you really have to choose carefully. This shade I am reviewing today, will suit mostly NC 42-45 and I am actually NC 41. Hence, it comes off as slightly darker on me so I simple use it on the outer perimeter of my face, conveniently skipping the bronzer. However, it works as a great concealer, provided you know the application well. It has strong yellow-peach undertones and hence will be an excellent choice for warm Indian skin tones. It has some deep shades as well which you can use for contouring.

Texture – the texture is thick and unless you are well accustomed with foundations, I would say – stay away from this one. It is in the form of a pan cake stick and the texture is thick. However, it isn’t very hard to deal with if follow certain procedures. The texture makes it slightly time consuming to blend, especially if you have dry and patchy skin. Therefore, use a good moisturizer and primer underneath. It doesn’t have SPF and there isn’t any white cast spelled on the face.

Application – before the application, make sure you have well moisturized canvas to paint this one. The best way to apply this TV Paint Stick is to use fingers and damp sponge. Warm up the product between your fingers and apply on a small area (do not load up too much products at a time). Now, take the damp sponge and keep buffing unless, you see this blending onto the skin. This is a tip I learnt from the MUAs that for this kind of thick texture, it is better to buff with a sponge than drag and blend. For eyes also, warm up the product and softly pat to blend in.

Coverage – coverage is medium to heavy. It has the ability to conceal acne, scars, dark circles (even the worst cases), pigmentation and the list goes on forever. In fact, coverage is the best thing for which the TV Paint Stick is famous for. It doesn’t look ashy or uneven or unnatural, but good coverage to hide and conceal any blemish whatsoever. It is great for a difficult skin which suffers from flaws and also for the wedding and party purposes.

Finish – I have oily skin and the foundation look dewy to transforms to oily in an hour. Therefore, you have to set it with a good powder (preferably loose) and then you are good to go. Dry skin won’t need a powder except for under eyes as it looks dewy on them. I use the Kryolan TL4 which is a yellow base powder to give a brightening effect to the matte skin.

Criticism – the foundation has certain bad points as well. It is very heavy and doesn’t let the skin breathe at all. It blocks the pores very badly and hence, every time I use this, I end up with tiny zits all around the face. So, this isn’t a foundation to be worn every day. The product wont suit sensitive and acne-prone skin so be cautious when you pick this up. For those, you can try the Dermacolor range which is equally good and oil free.

Staying Power – the foundation stays pretty well and survives around 7 hours even during summer. It doesn’t melt down and create a mess but I always use blotting paper or powder touch ups when I feel that the skin is getting slightly oily. It is also water proof as well.

OVERALL – the foundation is multipurpose and efficient. It has high coverage, dewy finish for dry skin and great staying power. On the downside, it takes a lot of time and effort to blend and break outs due to its thickness. For the price, the amount will last a long time.

WHAT I LIKED:

  • Handy and travel friendly packaging.
  • Countless shades to choose from.
  • Can be used as foundation, bronzer and concealer.
  • Blends well into the skin
  • Heavy coverage and doesn’t look unnatural if applied properly.
  • Dewy finish for dry skin and can be made matte with loose powder.
  • Staying power of around 7 hours.
  • Sweat proof.
  • A little amount will last a long time and hence it is surely value for money.

WHAT I DISLIKED:

  • Dull and unhygienic packaging.
  • Not for beginners as it requires a lot of techniques to blend in.
  • Breaks out on skin due to heavy texture.
  • Can’t be used as a regular foundation.

RATING – 3/5

RECOMMENDATION – I have a love and hate relationship with this. Due to the breakout issues, I simply don’t use it very often but only when I want to opt for heavy coverage for special occasion. Normal to dry skin can use it well with proper moisturization and blending and for others, but only if you are looking for super heavy natural coverage.

Editor’s Note: I have heard so much about this Sanchita, and I always wanted to try. But then again I am not much into super heavy coverage and usually prefer water based and light foundations. Though I feel this is perfect for someone who has to be photographed or has to be in front of the camera all the time.

Feb 2016 Forest Essentials My Envy Box Unboxing

Feb 2016 Forest Essentials My Envy Box Unboxing

Hi guys,

So after the Feb Fab Bag yesterday, it’s time for the Feb My Envy Box, and this time they are celebrating 15 years of Luxurious Ayurveda and it’s the Forest Essentials Special Box.

All the products are from Forest Essentials and it is one of my favourite brands that actually works and shows results on your skin and is all natural and free of chemicals.

MRP: Rs.850/- (Available HERE)

The box is white colored with a pretty peacock design on the top, looks quite nice. All the FE products inside are arranged well compartment wise.

The products in this month’s box:

  • Forest Essentials Mashobra Honey & Vanilla Body Lotion- Rs.375/- for 50ml
  • Forest Essentials Luxury Sugar Soap- Rs.295/- for 50g
  • Forest Essentials Hand Pounded Organic Fruit Scrub -8g (Full size is Rs.1675/- for 50g, so this should be around Rs.300)
  • Forest Essentials Lightening & Brightening Tejasvi Emulsion- 8g (Full size is Rs.2275/- for 50g, so this would be Rs.400)
  • Forest Essentials Madurai Jasmine & Mogra Silkening Shower Wash- Rs.295/- for 50ml

The prices of the smaller 8g samples mentioned on the card are not really justified coz the difference is huge compared to the original price of the product, so there must be a mistake. But still the products are pretty decent sized and the body lotion, soap and shower wash are perfect for travel too.

The total value of the products in the box comes to around Rs.1650-1700 which is still pretty good coz you are paying Rs.850/- per month which is half of that, and even lesser with 3 months of 6 months subscription.

I love FE products and these samples are perfect for me to try and know if it’s worth investing in the full sized product coz FE is not exactly cheap. I definitely recommend getting this month’s My Envy Box, even if you have never tried Forest Essentials products or you swear by them, either way it’s a win-win.

Also there is a special discount card and you can get 10% off on all purchases above Rs.1000/- on Forest Essentials India website using ‘FE15YRS’. My Envy Box has come up with a luxury jewellery subscription in association with NIMAI and currently there is 10% off for the month of Feb using ‘JEWEL10’

Do you like Forest Essentials? Which is your favourite out of the lot. in this month’s box?

Feb 2016 ‘Love & Makeup’ Fab Bag Unboxing

Feb 2016 ‘Love & Makeup’ Fab Bag Unboxing

Hi guys,

I just got my February 2016 Fab Bag and the theme for this month’s bag is ‘Love and Makeup’ as it’s the Valentine’s month.

Read my previous Fab Bag reviews:

MRP: Rs.599/- per month (Buy HERE)

It’s a red colored textured pouch going along the ‘Love’ theme.

The products in this month’s bag:

  • Just Herbs Coorgi Coffee Lip Smoothening Lip Salve (Full sized)- Rs.345/- for 8g
  • Hikari Cosmetics Blush- Sun Kissed (Full sized)- Rs.1000/- for 6g
  • Spa Ceylon White Jasmine Facial Masque (Full sized)- Rs.2150/- for 100g
  • Chamki Nail Polish in Firozi Blue (Full sized)- Rs.150/- for 11ml
  • Estee Lauder Perfect Clean Multi Action Lotion/Toner- (7ml)- Rs.4470/- for 200ml

I got the Spa Ceylon White Jasmine Facial Masque in the Dec bag and it was a month where you could select one product and I had selected this coz previously I had got the Cooling Foot Scrub in Oct and wanted to try this. Though I love this masque but I am still not done with the previous one and would have loved to try something else than the same product.

The Just Herbs Coorgi Coffee Lip balm is one of my favourites, it smells amazing (like filter coffee) and it free of chemicals, parabens and does not feel waxy. The most light weight lip balm I have ever used and I am glad I got another of my favourites.

Hikari Blush in Sun Kissed is a pretty milky brown shade, I thought it would shimmery and more like a bronzer coz of the name ‘Sun Kissed’ but it is almost matte with very subtle shimmer and it would a perfect contour shade for me. For girls who are fairer and lighter than me, this would make a nice everyday blush but I doubt this would show up on darker skin tones. It can also double up as an eye shadow and/or a transition shade for blending.

Estee Lauder Perfect Clean Multi Action Lotion/Toner is a deluxe sample and pretty good to try out for 6-7 days.

Chamki Nail Polish is again a full sized 11ml nail paint, the color is a nice, teal blue and very summery. I have never heard of this brand, looking forward to try this out.

Overall I would say I am quite happy with the full sized products and the brands in this month’s Fab Bag. The value of products are around Rs.3800-3900/- which is amazing for a bag worth Rs.600/- Definitely recommend getting this month’s Fab Bag.

Did you get your Feb Fab Bag? What products did you receive? Do let me know in the comments below.

Mantra Herbals Holy Basil & Lily Revitalizer Face Cream Review

Hi guys,

I have been trying out their new Holy Basil and Lily Face Cream everyday since the past one month and here is my review on it.

What the Company claims: A timeless blend of extracts of Holy Basil, Dandelion, White Lily & Lavender in Sesame Oil. Nourishes and protects skin from the elements, resulting in soft and radiant skin. Holy Basil naturally clarifies the skin while White Lily soothes it. Dandelion is naturally rejuvenating & revitalizing. Lavender supports healthy skin while imparting a soothing scent. Ideal for reviving a dull & sallow complexion. Excellent for blemish-prone skin.

Authentic Ayurveda Product

Direction to Use: Apply on freshly cleansed face. Repeat whenever required. For best results use morning & night after cleansing with Holy Basil Toner.

Ingredients: Aqua, Dermofeel Sensolv (Isoamyl Laurate), Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Beeswax acid, Stearic acid, Glycerol Stearate, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax , Lilium Polyphyllum (White Lily) Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustilfolia (Lavender) Oil, Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Leaf Extract, Sodium Borate, Ocimum Bisilicum (Basil) Leaf Extract, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate.

MRP: Rs.700/- for 100ml (Buy HERE)

It comes in this white and pink tube with a flip cap packaging. The cream is white in color and quite thick in texture. It needs to be blended well but does not leave any cast as such.

It has a strong herbal smell but not bothersome, pleasant kinds. It feels slightly sticky but needs some time to settle down. It gives a complete matte finish and would work for oily skin too. Dry skin might need a heavier moisturizer, but only for winters.

I have been using this since a month and I also had some break outs and this cream did help me fade the acne scars quicker.  The blend of holy basil, lavender and white lily is quite good for the skin being anti-inflammatory and helps renew the cells and fade scars, though one has to use it continuously to see results. The beeswax and sesame oil make it quite rich and moisturizing. I love using it beneath my foundation too, coz it leaves no dry patches on the skin and moisturizes well but giving a matte finish.

Being all natural and chemical, paraben free is always a plus. I agree it’s priced on the higher side but same goes for brands like Forest Essentials and Kama Ayurveda and this is equally good and comparable.

I do not like the fact that it does not have SPF, I do not prefer using 2-3 different products and like my moisturizers to have SPF in them. Also these are not easily available yet, currently I believe only on their online site. I hope they are soon available on all websites and in stores coz they have an amazing range of bath, body, hair, pain management products and also products for men.

Overall I really like this cream and still using it daily. Definitely recommend this, would work for all skin types.

Beauty Hack: DIY SCRUB BAR

Beauty Hack: DIY SCRUB BAR

By Sanchita

Scrubbing is extremely essential in winters as the development of dry skin needs to exfoliate to preserve then natural radiance of the skin itself. Honestly speaking, I prefer my winters with oversized sweatshirt, hot chocolate, a warm bed to snuggle in and reading a soul touching book. Yes, I am one of those lazy girls who like to keep the skin well-scrubbed of dead cells and yet do nothing about it. This is when a dear friend of mine told me to make a ‘scrub bar’ that would clean and exfoliate at the same time. My heart leaped with just with the thought of such multipurpose body care product and I immediately thought of making it. So it’s time, my dear readers of NLM, to let you know how to DIY this amazing thing!

Things you need:

  • Crushed soap bar. (a gel based one works better and easier to deal with)
  • Olive oil.
  • Glycerin.
  • Ground coffee. (not the instant one which blends in but the grounded beans for filter)
  • Empty container.

Steps:

Step 1

1. In a double boiler or on top of a boiling water, place the cut out pieces of the soap. Do not put it directly under the flames which would lead to burning.

Step 2

2. Once the soap melts in heat, simmer it down and add 2 tbsp. of olive oil and glycerin each. Then, mix it well with the liquid soap.

Step 3

3. Now add the coffee in it and again use a spoon to mix it well.

Step 4

4. Remove the mixture from the heat and pour in it the container. Now, this has to be done very quickly as the soap has the tendency to get sticky.

Step 5

5. Keep it in the refrigerator for 1-2hours. It also depends upon the soap on how much time it requires to solidify. Mine was done in 1hour.

Final

6. And you homemade scrub bar is ready to use!

P.S: You can also add big granules of sugar to exfoliate. Sugar is slightly coarser when solidified and hence I generally feel it is too rough for my normal skin but if you have dry skin, you can incorporate that. Also, you can make a separate scrub bar with sugar and walnut particles for feet as well.

As we all know, soaps are excellent in washing the dirt and therefore I added it to cleanse the skin. Olive oil and glycerin is extremely hydrating and hence, while scrubbing you will get the desired moisture to be restored. Lastly, the coffee particles are coarse and semi-fine milled which helps in exfoliation- gently and effectively. It stimulates the blood flow while scrubbing and tighten the skin thereby reduces cellulite and great for anti-ageing.

Overall, this has been a lifesaver for me. I imply invest less time for skin care yet get the best of it. Do let me how you liked my DIY.

Editor’s Note: This sounds amazing Sanchita and I love the coffee smell, definitely trying it out.

Have you tried making something like before? A DIY Scrub Bar? Will you try this? It’s easy peasy.

Jan 2016 Beauty Resolutions Fab Bag Review

Jan 2016 Beauty Resolutions Fab Bag Review

Hi guys,

So this time I received the Fab Bag at my mom’s place the My Envy Box at my old address, so the delay in review or posted on social media directly.

Read my previous Fab Bag reviews:

MRP: Rs.699/- per month (Buy HERE)

January 2016 Fab Bag theme is ‘Beauty Resolutions’ coz we all have New Year resolutions 😀 The makeup print on the bag is super pretty and this is the perfect cosmetic bag for travel or storage, one of my most favourite Fab Bag bags!

Let’s come to the products, so I had an option to select one product in this month’s bag out of all the makeup options, and I had already tried everything else, so I went with the Laqa & Co. Nail Polish Pen coz I have never tried a nail polish pen and it was a nice, summery peach shade which I can’t wait to wear in summers.

Products:
  • Natural Bath & Body French Red Clay Face Mask 20g (Full size Rs 450/- for 100 ml)
  • Natural Bath & Body Vitamin E Whipped Cream 15g (Full size Rs 275/- for 50 ml)
  • Laqa and Co. Nail polish pen  (Full size Rs.1000/- for 5ml)
  • Votre Face Serum Full size (Rs 1670/- for 12 ml)
  • BBlunt Spotlight Hair Polish mini- Rs.250/-

I love the sound of both the Natural Bath & Body products and also the ingredients are pretty good. The French Red Clay mask has virgin coconut oil, turmeric powder, sandalwood extract, beetroot powder, kaolin clay, fuller’s earth, etc. And the Whipped cream is a blend of Vitamin E and argan oil. The cream is perfect for winters but I would prefer using the clay based mask in summers as clay based masks dry out my skin more though the coconut oil should balance it out, my skin is already super dry these days and I won’t risk it.

The Laqa & Co. Nail polish pen is in the shade Tweedledee is a nice pastel peach shade and also my first nail polish pen, quite happy that it’s a full sized product, can’t wait to try it out.

I love using serums and oils especially at night and in winters, currently I am obsessed with The Body Shop Oils Of Life Revitalizing Facial Oil, and this Votre Face serum sounds amazing with all the blend of essential and cold pressed oils in the ingredients. But my only worry is only active ingredients are mentioned :/ I hope it doesn’t break me out coz the Just Herbs Rejuvenating Beauty Elixir in the previous Fab Bag did break me out. I like the fact that this again is a full sized product.

And last but not the least, the BBlunt spotlight mini hair spray. Now I have 2 of the full sized ones and also one mini of this and I absolutely love it, it is perfect for adding some shine post your hairstyle and it gives slight hold too, though not much. It doesn’t make your hair stiff or hard and gives a nice sheen on the hair. This mini version is perfect for travel and/or handbag.

In all, I would say I loved this month’s Fab Bag and the fact that I got two full sized products, one hair spray mini and 2 deluxe sized samples and all the products are pretty good. Absolutely recommend getting this month’s bag if you still haven’t, also the bag in itself is really cute & quite useful.

Last month’s bag was also quite good, I hope this continues coz the products and bags have been really good from the past 2-3 months (except Nov) Touchwood!

What did you get in your January 2016 Fab Bag? What makeup product did you choose?

Acetone v/s Non-Acetone Nail Polish Removers

Acetone v/s Non-Acetone Nail Polish Removers

By Ishleen

Why are acetone nail polish removers so much better for you!

Acetone or Non-acetone—that is the question?

We have been asked times innumerable about the safest way to remove nail polishes, are acetone based removers safe and whether or not non-acetone removers are better for the nails? So here we have a short post which hopefully will appease your queries.

The pondering over the question in regards to the safety of acetone removers is as intense as the heated debate on the health benefits of chocolate. But you do not need to drown in the frenzy of arguments, as we have planned to bring forward some logical set of reasonings.

What exactly is acetone?

Acetone is the second safest solvent in the nail industry, after water. And clearly, we cannot use water to remove nail polishes, because if we could, the nail industries would have never established. Ok, enough on that. Undoubtedly there are many other solvents in the world, but none are as safe as compared to acetone.

Does acetone have any health hazards?

Health hazards? No, not any that we have heard of. Some people tend to believe that acetone has the potency to aggravate carcinogens and thereby cause cancer. This is NOT THE TRUTH. No scientific institution or research has ever proved this.

Secondly, the market hype about non-acetone nail polish removers has made people believe that acetone can get absorbed by your skin and in the process can get mixed with your blood stream. Girls, acetone CAN NOT pass through the dermis level of your nail bed. Acetone gets evaporated a bit too fast to get absorbed into your nail plate. So, it’s safe.

Why should you choose acetone removers over non-acetone polish removers?

Markets today have very strategically created the image of non-acetone removers to be the better version of acetone removers. In reality this is not true. Acetone based nail polish removers are slightly safer than non acetone removers, which basically constitute methyl ethyl ketone and ethyl acetate. Both of which are harmful for the healthy growth of nails. Surprised much?

Coming to the argument that acetone removers are drying, we could not contest it. But so are non- acetone removers, undoubtedly. In fact non-acetone removers are much more drying than acetone removers as they are not as effective as acetone removers when it comes to removing nail polishes.

Non-acetone removers were made to work basically with acrylic nails, as they used to get dissolved when tampered with acetone removers. Thus they are less effective than acetone removers, there by leaving us with no other choice than to let it be in contact with the nail and nearby skin for longer periods of time. This causes much more dryness than any ordinary acetone remover.

What to do in order to avoid dryness caused by acetone based removers?

The basic question is why do your nails feel dry after setting in contact with acetone removers? Remember when I told you that acetone was a good solvent and it dissolves all the polish very effectively. Similarly, acetone being a solvent also dissolves the natural oil and moisture from the skin surrounding your nail bed. Simple enough, eh?

Talking about the solution, it is a complete no brainer. Feed the skin with what the acetone could rip it off of. Oil! I mean if the acetone tends to strip off natural oils from your skin, slather some olive or almond oil on to the skin (not the nails, just the surrounding skin) which will be getting affected by oil.

By doing this one simple step, the acetone will be dissolving the oils applied externally, safeguarding most of your natural oils and moisture in the skin. Easy peasy!

Ok, so I am in a good mood today. Let me just throw in a bonus trick for you gorgeous girls to enjoy.

BONUS TRICK: Gel nails are beautiful and they are all the rage in the nail industry nowadays. But let us accept it, they can be expensive; and the additional expense to get them removed at the salon can be too overwhelming for some. Now, that we know that acetone is far better than non-acetone removers, let us try a simple trick here. Dab some oil on to the skin surrounding your nails. Taking a cotton swab completely doused in acetone nail polish remover place it onto the nail and cover the nail with a foil paper (the one sitting handy in your kitchen) and let it be for about 3-5 minutes. Do not unwrap the foil; just pull it straight off the tip along with the cotton.

The same trick can be used to remove chunky glitter polishes, but the acetone dipped cotton covered with foil should not be left on the fingernails for more than 3-5 minutes. It can damage your natural nail bed.

After all the heated debates and settled arguments, I have finally come to the conclusion that acetone removers are all the much better than non-acetone nail polish removers for your skin.

The only problem that acetone can cause is drying and to avoid the unquenchable-nail feeling, you can try the following acetone based DIY recipe for gorgeously nourished nails. Just take:

1. Ten parts acetone (any kind of pure acetone will do)

2. Two parts of water (normal or tap water)

3. 10-15 drops of any oil of your choice (I personally prefer using olive oil)

4. 5-8 drops of vitamin E (you can even use one or two vitamin E capsules for this purpose)

Just add these four simple ingredients into any old nail polish remover bottle and voila! You have a customized acetone based nail lacquer remover which will remove the most stubborn of nail polishes without ever drying your nails. I swear your friends will be jealous of your beautiful nails 🙂

Editor’s Note: That’s quite an interesting post Ishleen, also loved the last DIY recipe and would be trying that out. I have tried acetone free ones thinking they are all good, but the nail paint just won’t come off :/ I usually love using this oil based nail polish remover pads. This DIY thing sounds quite good and economical.

Have you tried non-acetone nail polish removers? Don’t you find them drying plus they do not take off the nail paint at all! Will you try this DIY recipe?
