Book Review: The Hunt for Kohinoor

Book Review: The Hunt for Kohinoor

About the book: The Hunt for Kohinoor’ is a spine-chilling ninety-six hour hunt through the world’s most dangerous terrain, where history collides with gunfire, for the elusive Kohinoor. Coming to your nearest bookstores this December 2013.

Manreet Sodhi Someshwar is the author of Earning the Laundry Stripes, The Long Walk Home, the national bestseller The Taj Conspiracy, and the thriller, The Hunt for Kohinoor.

Price : Rs. 295/-

It is a book about Mehrunissa Khosa – start to finish, and no one else. It is about how she is practically forced to help in the investigation, with grave risk to her own life and liberty, in a 96-hour long race that will determine the lives of hundreds, perhaps thousands – as well as the lives of her loved ones. It is a book of an innocent citizen getting caught in the biggest international hot-spot – India/Pakistan, and how she is brutally used to further national interest.

The first half of the book lays the plot and the background of the entire scenario with characterisation of the supporting characters. This is not wasted, as it has been well done – not too much detail, not too little; just enough detail to enable you to understand each character and his or her motives. Each characters reasons for behaving as they did has been clearly spelled out, which actually gives a deep understanding of the scenario, enhancing your reading pleasure.

The scenes literally play out in front of your eyes, so vivid is the description and so rich but simple is the language used. This is what the combination of deep characterisation and effective narrative has attained.

The story is gripping in nature but it gets a bit draggy at various places and I felt like skipping a couple of paragraphs and pages in between.

Overall sometimes I felt its dragged but otherwise its quite engaging..and I say, worth a try.

Have you read Manreet’s The Taj Conspiracy or The Hunt for Kohinoor ?

P.S: Book sent for review. Honest opinion.

Leather Jackets: Where it all began

Leather Jackets: Where it all began

In the modern day fashion industry, leather jackets have reached a level of luxury that once seemed unreachable. The outerwear icon has travelled from its modest roots, through the golden age of Hollywood, and is now worn by the rich and famous around the world. The expertise of leather manufacturers has made the leather jacket the modern day pinnacle of great fashion design.

The history of leather jackets

The leather jacket has a rich history spanning decades, but it all began with one piece that defined a generation. The bomber jacket, now known as a fashion statement the world over, first started as a clothing line synonymous with the military.

The first military jacket of its kind had a variety of names – ‘flight jacket’, ‘bomber jacket’, and ‘bombardier’, all with the same purpose – to grace the shoulders of  air force pilots worldwide. Early aviation designs began with open cockpits, creating the need for warm, protective outerwear for pilots, and so the bomber jacket was born.

The British Royal Flying Corps were one of the driving forces of the British Air Service during the First World War. Their signature uniform included fine leather coats that were extremely durable and perfect for flight. The U.S Army soon adopted the style of their British brethren, and in 1917 the Aviation Clothing Board began issuing heavier leather flight jackets to all Air Corps pilots. These jackets were much more protective, with higher collars, and wind flaps for taking to the air. Some of the jackets issued even had a stylish lining of fur.

During World War II, US-born free-fall parachutist Lee Irving developed the now classic sheepskin jacket for the Air Force. In 1926, his UK-based manufacturing company was the leading supplier of flight jackets for WWII Air Force pilots.

Hitting the mainstream

The Type A-2 leather flight jacket is one of the most well-known bomber jackets ever issued, with all the characteristics the US Air Force were known for in 1927. This included the removal of hand warmers as seen in previously issued coats because they were seen as unnecessary for the military. This was succeeded by the G-1 military jacket which was adopted by the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard groups, though its structure and overall appearance failed to gain the same popularity.

The Vietnam war led to the popularity of the MA-1 bomber jacket, frequently seen on television broadcasts around the world. Due to this, designers soon began moving its production to public shelves. This form of the military jacket became extremely popular with youth culture during the late 60s and early 70s, and was often seen as a symbol of rebellion against ‘the system’.

Today, the leather military jacket is as popular as it ever was, with different designers innovating the original bomber jacket style. Bodaskins is a company who specialise in men and women’s luxury leather jackets and offer customers the finest military jackets, plus a signature range of leather biker jackets as well as a custom tailor-made service.

Face Creams for a Younger Looking Future

Face Creams for a Younger Looking Future

Guest Post

As a beauty writer and enthusiast, one of the most common questions readers ask me is “How can I look younger?” I know that this is a question which almost every woman and every man asks themselves each day. The answer depends on the person’s needs, but there are several skin treatments, creams and products, such as day cream and regenerist serum, which can lend your skin a helping hand.

When someone who needs advice on anti-aging skincare approaches me, one of the first things that I do is ask them what kind of skin they have, and what their current skin care routine entails. This allows me to get a feel for the needs of their skin. I also learn what they use on their skin on already and how their skin reacts to certain ingredients.

Once I’ve spoken to them about this, I normally address any specific concerns that make their skin look older than it should, such as dry skin, which tends to need slightly more TLC than normal skin. If they’re not already, I recommend a simple cleansing, toning and moisturising routine twice a day; once in the morning and once at night, to start them off. The cleanse, tone and moisturise method has long been respected as a great way to care for skin and helping it to look as healthy as possible.

When it comes to specific creams, any person who wants to look younger, or maintain a youthful appearance, needs to consider anti-aging skincare. There are many anti-aging products available to consumers today, which can make buying new skincare products feel overwhelming, but it’s possible to narrow down your choices by picking products that match your skin’s needs. If, for example, you have very dry skin, opt for anti-aging skincare that specifically caters for dry skin. This will help keep it both hydrated and young looking.

Look for products that use specific terms, like regenerist serum, anti-aging lotion, age-defying and anti-wrinkle creams. Products that use these terms are specially designed to meet the needs of aging skin, which needs to be protected against external hazards, while also regenerating the skin’s appearance. The skin will start to rejuvenate, with fine lines and wrinkles looking less visible. They’ll also protect the skin’s natural protective barrier, which becomes weaker over time.

How your skin ages largely depends on your genetics and lifestyle, but there are many creams available that prevent drastic, expensive and sometimes dangerous cosmetic surgery becoming a necessary alternative. I firmly believe that there’s an anti-aging product out there to suit each and every one of us. I encourage all men and women who want to stay looking youthful (and feel the same!) to start looking for the perfect skin product. Take the time to find it and time will work towards perfecting your appearance, and that’s got to be worth the wait!

Choices by Revlon- Fashion

Choices by Revlon- Fashion

After the success of their first Choices by Revlon theme on Relationships, Revlon India is now turning the spotlight on Fashion

Fashion is not just limited to a woman’s day-to-day look. This extends to the destinations that she visits, the food she eats, the accessories that she chooses to wear, the lifestyle that she chooses to live. Fashion is democratic. It’s in every choice she makes.

Now the big question is – what is your fashion persona? The answer lies in the Choices by Revlon app which you can easily access here: (http://bit.ly/ChoicesbyRevlon). Answer three easy questions and let your choices define who you are when it comes to Fashion.

They invite you to visit the app and to enjoy finding out interesting things about yourself. Let your readers and friends try it too and see who among you is a Bold Trendsetter, a Bohemian Babe or maybe the Glam Queen.

Fashion and style are the extensions of one’s intellect.

It’s not that easy to answer the question, “what is fashion?” because it means different things to different people. Fashion is an art. It’s a religion. It’s a job. It’s a peek into a personality. It’s playfulness. It’s an escape or a disguise. It is a feast for the eyes. But ultimately, fashion is an individual statement of expression for each of us.

French fashion designer Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

It’s true. Fashion isn’t defined solely by our clothing choices, but is also conveyed through the way we carry ourselves, our personalities and our views of the world.

Fashion and fashion trends mainly refers to anything which is popular in a culture at any given time. It is inclusive of areas such as; style of dress, cuisine, literature, art, architecture, fashion trends and many other popular factors. Fashion trends often change rapidly, and “fashion” is often used to describe the latest version of these trends.

Personally for me, my fashion persona in terms of clothes is street chic, smart, more casual and comfortable..sometimes dressy..always elegant..accessories are a must have for me ! Something bright, something neon, something blingy..is what I always need..and of course good shoes..they make or break your outfit..is’nt it ?
Check my OOTDs to know more about my fashion persona..

By the way, I got ‘City Chic’ in the Choices by Revlon app..What is your fashion persona ? Let me know what you got in the comments below 🙂

A Better Way of Life with Lenovo

A Better Way of Life with Lenovo

When my laptop decided to go paranoid, I switched to using the Lenovo Yoga 8 B6000 tablet. And it’s been awesome.
So, until the beginning of this month, I didn’t have a tablet.

Me showrooming at Croma back then

Me: I don’t have a tablet, so could you walk me through the different features?
Salesman: You don’t have a tablet?!
Me: I do not.
Salesman: And you don’t know the features of a tablet?
Me: I do not.
Salesman: Do you have a feature phone or a smartphone?
Me: Dude! I am not from the 18th Century. I am just a first time tablet user.

But anyways, the Lenovo Yoga was the obvious choice from the universe of options that were on display. It lets you do some pretty cool stuff and ranks way above others in terms of battery life and ease of use.

Fast forward to today. I have begun writing this post on the Lenovo Yoga 8 B6000 tablet, whilst getting a foot massage and a pedicure at a salon.

It’s been only 2 weeks and the Lenovo Yoga is already my calendar, address book, music player, voice recorder, traffic indicator, camera, games console, newspaper, GPS navigator, blogger, fitness indicator and social media contact device. Sometimes when I’m bored, I even use it to make phone calls. The best part is, it has a lot of stamina (Read Batter Life). I can use it with ease without having to worry about battery life.

It took me less than 5 mins to set Lenovo Yoga up with the Bluetooth in my car, and I was very pleased for figuring that out. I can do a whole lot of things with the Lenovo Yoga vis-à-vis my office computer which doesn’t let me access facebook, twitter, Linkedin, web based emails – security firewalls that are slightly less stringent that the ones used by the US government.

And yeah, it doesn’t drain the life out of your eyes. If you have had LASIK surgery and use a smartphone regularly, then you will know what I am talking about.

But, besides going over the cool features of the tablet, I thought it would be fun to share what a somewhat typical day looks like for me at the moment.

A somewhat regular day

Around 8:00AM: The alarm rings. I go for the Snooze option till I can no longer be on bed. I finally get up at 8:30. (Its winter and my blanket is super warm and cozy )

Around 8:30 AM: I check my emails, Whatsapp and other important updates, automatically synced to my tablet, respond to important mails and then finally head for the shower. I can respond to and send emails, search my folders, and delete old messages. I can also send and accept appointments. My reminder tells me that I have to take mom to the annual health check-up today. Today looks like another hectic day.

Around 9:00AM: I head for breakfast. I bring my tablet with me, so that I can look things over and plan my day.I’ve gained weight, and the Fitbit is helping me take it off again. I’m still not down to the weight I was at, but little by little…step by step…I know I’ll get there. The mobile app for the same on the tablet keeps me updated throughout the day.

9:30 AM: I start preparing a spot at my kitchen table to take pictures of products I’ll talk about in an upcoming blog post. I use the tablet for the pictures, although not of DSLR standard, are brilliant enough.

10:00 AM: Today, I am travelling to Pune, a 4 hour drive. I switched on the ‘Navigation’ app and the ‘Google Maps’ app. From this, I can figure out the directions and traffic status. This, I must say, is one of the best features of the tablet. Technology at its best. Because people who know me in real life also know that I get lost easily. I connect my phone to the car stereo to listen to my favourite playlist. Wow. The Mumbai Pune expressway rocks.

14:30 PM: Finally arriving at my destination (better late than never), I head to the hotel. Time to find a place for Lunch. I use Zomato to find restaurants that are close by, check the menus, and, most importantly, the ratings. This handy app, which is available for the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, allows me to try local establishments rather than relying on chain restaurants. It can then switch over to Google Maps which gives me walking or driving directions to the location.

15:00 PM: The meeting has started. I don’t carry the notepad and pen to take down notes. Instead, I use the tablet. The icing on the cake is, the Lenovo Yoga tablet looks very sexy and appealing. Perfectly suited for use in a formal meeting or a casual one.The fact that it can be positioned in multiple ways, is so unlike those boring standard laptops or tablets out there.

16:00 PM: Finally done with the Meeting. Now time to head back home.On a way back, we got a flat tire. This would’ve caused a major delay, but the tablet had the ‘Justdial’ app installed, which let me quickly get in touch with the nearest service centre. The convenience of that was awesome.

17:00 PM: “The Irritating Boss”. My boss called me and wanted me to send over the power-point deck and the underlying calculations I was working on yesterday. I was supposed to send them tomorrow and so, they were still in draft mode. I quickly opened the files (For those who think that a tablet is just a big smartphone, they are mistaken), made some changes and emailed them across, instead of having to wait until I got home, when it would be too late. That was a huge thing.

19:00 PM: Vashi is here. There is a Mega Sale going on at Raghuleela Mall. That’s music to my ears. I have to buy some stuff as gifts for the upcoming wedding season (Why the hell is everyone on a wedding spree?, but anyways…). Again, the flipkart and Snapdeal app will tell me whether the mall discount is actually a discount or just one of those shopping discount scams.

20:30 PM: Finally back home. Rescheduled taking my mom to the doctors, to tomorrow morning. Right now, I would prefer to read and read, till I doze off. The perfect size of the screen lets me to read ebooks conveniently, without stressing out my eyes. The long battery backup comes extremely handy. Its been over 5 hours of active usage and I still have plenty of power to last for a couple of hours of reading, till I sleep.

23:00 PM: Time to turn in. I realize that I have been productive and connected during my entire travel day without opening my laptop.

These are just a few of the apps on my phone and a tiny number of those that are available.

Why did I go for a Lenovo tablet over a laptop or a better smartphone?

Lenovo Yoga being what it is, it offers the perfect combination of long battery life, more utility value than a smartphone and a lot more portability than a laptop. In short, it is the swiss army knife of gadgets, and offers the best of all worlds.

Of all tablets, Lenovo Yoga is trying to do something different and unique, taking a risk to give the user that extra bit of world class experience at an affordable price. Hats off to the product team at Lenovo.
PS: You realise the importance of most importantly, the battery when you feel helpless in front of a dead phone. Every one of us has been there atleast once.

And the must haves of an ideal tablet are;

Tablet as a card – An ideal tablet should letme store tickets, vouchers and loyalty cards on your phone. I can simply shove your phone under the scanner to board a plane, enter a concert or get your 10th coffee free at your favourite cafe. It’s going to be a sleeper technology, but it’s the next piece of the puzzle in Lenovo’s plans for world domination.
Lots of battery power – I guess I am paranoid about battery backup. But this is the most common complaint by smart gadget users.
Simple to use & “Cool” – This is what Microsoft did wrong and Apple did right. Need I say more?

P.S: This entry is for Indiblogger’s Lenovo #Betterway Contest. Check out the Lenovo India Facebook page for more details..https://www.facebook.com/LenovoIndia

Australians spend up big on Cosmetic surgery

Australians spend up big on Cosmetic surgery

It seems Australians have either endured the economic downturn very well, or have a higher preference on appearances than many other countries, according to some recent statistics. Like the USA, more and more Australians are electing to undergo a range of cosmetic surgery procedures, in an effort to turn back time and “look as good as they feel”.

With Australians undergoing a range of cosmetic procedures from eyelid surgery, nose surgery, breast augmentation and liposuction, the market has seen significant growth over the past few years.

In 2010 Australia spent in excess of $1bn on cosmetics, and industry experts have revealed that it has continued to rise since.

While specific numbers of procedures are yet to be properly recorded (partially due to the surgery being elective), overall spending indicates a significant market for the cosmetics industry. Comparing to the USA, who spend around $10.1bn on surgical and non-surgical procedures, Australians actually spend more per capita than their northern hemisphere counterparts – almost 40% more, a figure that’s quite staggering considering the size and development of the country.

With Australia spending $454,500 per ten thousand people, and USA spending $328,000 per ten thousand people (with currencies being roughly the same upon statistics) it’s no wonder why large insurance companies such as NIB are setting up shop to take advantage of Australia’s cosmetic tourism industry.

Many of the people seeking cosmetic surgery are over the age of 65, with 92% of patients being women. Men are yet to jump on the cosmetic band wagon, but industry is starting to feel some traction, with many skin care products now aimed at men.

The procedures most in demand in 2009 were eyelid surgery, nose surgery, breast augmentation, breast lifts and liposuction, which accounted for around 67% of Australia’s total cosmetic surgical procedures. Dr. Russel Knudsen estimated that around 16,000 breast augmentations and 15,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2010, with procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections also on the rise, accounting for around $300 million p.a..

There is some concern for the Australian cosmetics industry however, with many Australians seeking international procedures in countries such as Thailand, where the Australian dollar and economy makes cosmetic procedures comparatively cheap. The major concern (aside from a loss of revenue) is the quality of procedures and the increasing number of Australians returning with botched cosmetic procedures, which has not only caused many complications for patients, but also poses a burden on the Australian medical system.

While the news of increased spending might seem positive for the cosmetics industry, it’s also a concern for the Australian Psychological Society, which have suggested that recent figures may indicate serious underlying psychological issues among Australians.

With Australia holding it’s title with many of the most livable cities in the world, perhaps it means Australians are better able to afford cosmetic procedures than ever before, making cosmetic surgery a more viable option for many people who previously had to learn to love their body. The question still remains as whether the public will continue to accept cosmetic surgery, or not. But if so, how high will the market will soar?
