Everything your skin needs to know this winter

‘Everything your skin needs to know this winter’
-Dr. Sangeeta Amladi, Head Medical Services and R&D Kaya Skin Clinic

With winter fast approaching, the change in the weather can be very stressful on your skin. The low humidity during winter can cause the skin to become dry, flaky, dull and irritated.  When the temperatures change, a change in your skin care routine is necessary. So along with a proper skin care regime, a healthy diet is also essential for healthy skin.  Get to know your skin a little, how it works and the effects of winter conditions on the skin.

How should you alter your beauty regimen as winter approaches?
—     Wash your face with a mild cleanser and rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid antibacterial soaps and very hot water
—     If you have really dry skin, avoid toners as they dry it out even more. If you have oily or normal skin, try an astringent
—     Apply a water-based moisturizer while your skin is still damp to seal in moisture before it’s lost
—     For dryer skin, use a heavier cream
—     Exfoliate once a week to remove flaky skin

Foods that improve skin health, especially in winter

A healthy diet may include the following;

—     A bowl of green vegetables like spinach, avocado and asparagus with a seasoning of  garlic
—     A salad consisting of grapes, oranges, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and onions
—     A bowl of fruits including watermelon, berries – strawberries, blueberries, grapes, papaya, apricots
—     Drink plenty of fluids: water, juices, milk, soups, and more
—     Caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks and fried foods should be avoided

Daily skin practices for Healthy Skin

In winter, the skin generally gets dry. Dry skin lacks the moisture needed to keep the skin supple looking and therefore has a flaky look. Dry skin needs a daily moisturizer plus possibly a heavier, overnight cream to keep it in a healthy condition. Here are some tips to follow this winter….
—     Use a long lasting moisturizer twice a day, preferably on damp or just washed skin   (for better results)
—     Generally, skin cleansing should be limited to once or twice a day.
—     Do not use alcohol-based astringents, wipes and colognes.
—     Avoid frequent application of moisturizers especially on face as over doing it could clog the pores
—     Do not forget to wear your sunscreen, preferably a moisturizing form.
—     Remove makeup to maintain healthy skin. Use a skin cleanser to gently remove dirt, excess oil and makeup
—     Exercise will do more than simply get your heart rate going. It will clear your pores, increase your metabolism, and sweating allows your inner body to cleanse itself.

1)            Why the skin becomes dry in winters?

There are a number of reasons, both external and internal, why the skin gets dry during cold weather.

External Causes: Low humidity during winter enhances the drying effect on the skin. Exposure to dry wind, cold water or drying soaps further increases the skin’s dryness.

Internal Causes: Due to low temperature, the blood vessels supplying the skin become constricted. This reduces blood flow to the skin and sweat glands and oil producing glands in the body. When the water content of the skin diminishes both internally and externally; the skin cells shrink and dry. This produces flaking of the superficial skin cells. Most people, because they do not feel thirsty during winter, do not drink enough water or fruit juices during winter. This results in low volume of the circulating blood causing dehydration which is another cause for skin dryness.

2)            What are the easy tips to keep the skin healthy and not dry?

—     Drink adequate water
—     Eat balanced food containing all nutrients. Include vegetables, fruits, and fresh fish in your daily food intake.
—     Avoid alcohol and coffee. Both will dehydrate the skin and predispose to more drying and itching.
—     Avoid using harsh soaps. Soap free cleansers containing moisturizers are safe choices.
—     Using a humidifier inside the house will help keep the skin moist even during winter.
—     Exercise will help produce sweat and increase blood flow to the skin, which will improve the hydration of the skin.
—     Colloidal oat meal baths, in addition to their action of preventing water loss, also soothe the skin.
—     Apply a good moisturizing cream or lotion immediately after bath, before the body dries up. This will trap the moisture inside and keep skin soft and supple

3)            Homemade packs which can help in keeping the skin better in winters

—     Mix honey and milk and apply on the face. Mix half-a-cup honey to your bath water for soft and smooth skin.
—     Aloe Vera also helps to remove dead skin cells and is soothing, healing, and moisturizing. Hence, aloe Vera gel can be applied topically on affected areas.
—     A facemask comprising of egg white and honey gently removes the tan from your face.
—     For oily skin type – Soak Multani Mitti and mint powder in yoghurt for 30 minutes and mix them well by beating. Apply it on face for 15 minutes and leave it to dry. Then wash off with lukewarm water. After that, rinse by cold water.

4)            Do’s and don’ts to take care of skin in winters.

Do’s
—     Use soap – free moisturizing cleansers for face as well as body
—     Can add emollient oil to bath water (1-2 drops per bucket of water)
—     Apply moisturizer immediately after patting dry
—     Use a moisturizing sunscreen on exposed body parts, 20 minutes before stepping out in the Sun
—     Use a moisturizer twice or thrice a day
—     Use a night cream (long acting moisturizer) on face and body before sleeping
—     For oily skin, use light moisturizer, those specifically suited for oily skin
—     For hair, use mild moisturizing shampoo and condition hair every time after shampoo
—     Trim the split ends
—     For frizzy hair, use leave-on condition

Avoid:
o   Toners and astringent
o   Long hours in AC
o   Frequent shampooing

5)            Hair care during winters

The tips below will help keep your hair healthy during winter months –
—     Do not shampoo your hair too often
—     Avoid taking hot showers or washing your hair in very hot water, use warm or cool water instead
—     A leave-in conditioner works wonders for dry and brittle hair
—     Avoid using heated appliances as much as possible. Using a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron dries hair out even more in winter.

Winter and Skin Damage

Winter and skin damage

As winter is setting in, listen to the cues that your skin is subtly giving you.  Winds and cold weather are just as damaging to skin as over exposure to the sun. Before turning on the geyser, think of the effect of the relaxing warm shower on your skin; before sipping that hot cup of coffee, think of the effect it may have on your skin; before using a blower to keep you warm, think of how dry it is making your skin.

Fight skin damage this winter. Use a rich moisturiser for your face and a super hydrating and moisturising body lotion. Depending on how dry your skin becomes, you may need a more emollient moisturizer. Any moisturizer should be loaded with ingredients that help keep moisture in your skin (glycerin, ceramides, fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid are just a few examples)

Added benefits like Vitamin E in your body lotion are a bonus. See to it that there is no dryness or flakiness in your skin..which can lead to itching, redness, stretchy skin..

How would you check if your skin is thoroughly moisturised ? If you run your nail gently on your skin and you see a white line, your skin is dry. And applying a moisturiser once a day would not help if its very dry. You need to reapply whenever you feel its getting dry again.

Most important thing..do not skip a sunscreen thinking its winter..sunscreen is very important. Read why HERE and HERE

Read about ten different DIY face packs you can use this winter HERE.

Applying and reapplying a lip balm for your tender, delicate lips which get affected first in winters. (Atleast mine does.)

Tip: Applying moisturiser right after shower, when your skin is damp, would help absorb it faster, deeper, better.

Homemade Yogurt and Honey Face Pack for Dry Skin

Homemade Yogurt and Honey Face Pack for Dry Skin

Guest Post by Gowthami

Hey Everyone!
This is Gowthami 🙂 I’ll be sharing a skin hydrating face pack recipe today 🙂 Yogurt and honey face pack hydrates skin from the deep and gives you well nourished, luminous glowing skin! It also helps to reduce the discoloration due to sun tan/burn. So now I will show you how to prepare this effective homemade pack.

Ingredients:
Yogurt – 2 teaspoons
Organic Honey- 1 teaspoon
Olive oil – ½ teaspoon

Steps:
Add 2 teaspoons of yogurt into a clean bowl and I prefer fresh homemade yogurt for face packs.
Add 1 teaspoon of organic honey to the yogurt and mix it will using a fork.
Now for dry skin beauties, you can add ½ spoon olive oil to the above mixture.

(Optional)For oily skin beauties, 3 to 6 lemon drops to the yogurt and honey mixture.
Now mix the olive oil, yogurt and honey well using a fork.

Tada! The face pack is all ready to use!

Apply on the clean face and leave the pack on for 20 minutes. Then wash the pack with tap water.
Honey has super astringent properties and it helps to heal the skin from sun tan. Also helps to soothe the skin well. Yogurt gives you mild exfoliation to the skin and stimulates the collagen production in the skin and increases the skin elasticity!

Try this simple and effective homemade face pack for glowing skin. If you have sensitive skin then add honey more to the face pack. Honey calms the skin well.

I hope you find the post useful and interesting 🙂 Kindly share your thoughts in the comment section below!

How to Maintain Weight during Festivities?

How to Maintain Weight during Festivities? : The Question That Bothers

Guest Post by Isheeta

You might have gained a few extra pounds during these festivities, and you sure know the coming months aren’t much of a relief either. There are going to be numerous platters of tempting delights, more sweets, more food, more drinks, everything multiplied with the word “more”. And we Indians, when it comes to visiting aunts & cousins, nagging grandmas and maasis__ the needles start spinning on the scales before we even know it.

This is an issue we handle every year end. We indulge, convincing ourselves that there is tomorrow always, but c’mon who are we kidding. Before we know it, it’s Christmas and then New Year’s. Partying, Food, Drinks, and out-of-control Weighing Machines! Here are just a few tips & points to keep in mind to at least Maintain the weight, if not shedding it.

1. Half the Workout is better than No Workout at all!

Try to get at least 20-30 minutes of exercise during the Holidays, weekdays or weekends. Try running on that treadmill that is now a clothes hanger. Or get your act together with a few yoga asanas. Follow suryanamaskaras daily if the time is short, and preparations many and the laze is creeping in. Just get moving! Go for power walks, jog, dance. Anything!

2. Do Not Skip Meals, whatsoever!

Eat your meals. Just because you’d a crappy breakfast this morning, does not mean you eat cake for lunch and let go for the rest of the day. Eat well. Take care that your remaining meals compensate for the crappy breakfast of the morning. Do not skip meals or over-indulge. Moderation is key. Follow portion control, while keeping those taste buds satiated. You had a bad dinner, no problem. Try a fruit salad bowl for breakfast or breakfast smoothies the next morning.

3. Keep Active :

Now is the time to please all the relatives & you folks by keeping on your feet. Run errands, get chores done, decorate dust_ whatever it takes. This with that workout session of the mornings makes a big impact.

4. Drink Plenty of Water :

Yes, now even more. Do not cut down your intake of water or replace them with other liquid drinks & content yourself that you’d the day’s fill. Drink plenty of water to limit your sugary drinks that pack on belly fat. It will also help you eat less & help your body function better.

5. Get Proper Rest :

Get all that rest you probably cringed for during the workdays now. Sleep to keep your metabolism high. This way you will be motivated to workout the next day & not feel lethargic.

6. Choose smaller plates :

We all know the golden rule : the 8/9 inch dinner plate size. Eating on smaller plates has been proven to keep you more satisfied than the customary 12 inch plates now used across restaurants and homes.

7. Never end up at a party hungry :

Snack a bit before going to the next party in tow. If you go hungry, you’ll be grabbing the bread basket before you know it. Munch on a whole grain granola bar, low-fat yogurt, fruit, veggies or nuts. When you arrive at the party, you won’t be jumping at the hors d’oeuvres.

8. Drink Alcohol, but in moderation :

If you are keen on the bar section, go ahead. But keep in mind you are getting empty calories. That will be 7 calories per gram. That’s just 2 short of the 9 calories per gram one gets from Fats. Alcohol also increases the appetite. Remember, moderation is the key.

9. Forgo the sauce :

Every menu plan at parties comes with sauces, ghee-laden curries, buttery dips. Avoid them Go for that side of salad that somehow is left out. Grab the vegetable sides. Pile them, your plate will look as full if it were otherwise laden with the sauces & curries.

10. Trick your mind when it comes to Desserts :

Ah! The gulab jamuns, ras malais, petha, barfis, kaju katlis & the halwas can create a stampede at the dessert corner. If you cannot resist desserts (like I do!), the do not stop that urge. Portion control is your mantra here. Dish out your dessert in smaller bowls. Don’t worry you’ll be as satisfied. I follow a simple rule when it comes to desserts & I have them post every dinner meal : the 4/5 tblsp per serving. That way my bowl is full, and so is my craving satisfied. Add some fruit slices with a gulab jamun. That way your sweet plate won’t look empty, and you are probably not going to pile on more of those tempting sugar-dipped balls in your plate. Know your sugar rush well.

Remember, Holidays & Festivities are a time to enjoy with family and friends and catch up on all the fun times & relaxation for a healthy working mind & body. Enjoy them well, and plan effective strategies to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Maintaining what you started gives you a better reason to celebrate. Your body tells you when it is full. Heed to that, and there should be no problem. Enjoy your holidays. Cheers & Happy Holidays!

Editor’s Note: Amazing tips Isheeta..well comprised..if we follow a few pointers, it goes on a long way for our health.

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013 Trends

TREND REPORT @ Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013

This fall fashion goes beyond clothing

Amazonian Skin Tones & Sculpted look

The models at LFW WF 2013 looked to accentuate the rich and bronze color of Indian Skin. The use of bronze and peach blushes allowed the models to have an earthy glow.  To avail this healthy glow, Lakmé Salon offers a Chocolicious Masque and a Perfect Radiance Facial to rejuvenate your skin and prep it for a dry winter. The youth Infinity facial further accentuates the sculpted look.

A Dab of Glitter

This season, the nails trended with a dab of glitter on them. The use of matt colors and dull shades were brought to life with a variety of glitter shades either sprinkled on randomly or carefully painted on the top or bottom half of the nail. This is a definite keeper for the coming festive season.  When you head down to the Lakmé Salon avail their Nail Art service and give your nails the look of the season.

Colors: Black & Gold

With summer at a close, Winter Festive reflected the regal and sophistication of black and Gold. Perfect for grand occasions, festivals, weddings and celebrations, one can never go wrong with these colors. Designers like Nikhil Thampi, Vikram Phadnis, Rocky S and even Sabyasachi Mukherjee displayed an array of ways black and Gold can complement you this season.

Sleek, Tamed & Pull back

In winter, one’s hair can get dry and extremely frizzy with the lack of natural oils to keep it nourished. LFW WF trended sleek, and pulled back hairdos that held the sophistication and health of the hair. Lakmé Salon offers Miracle oil or Morrocon Oil treatments which removes the frizz and dryness and allows the hair to shine through.

Day & Night Eyes

An Indian woman’s eye makeup is imperative to her overall look and this LFW WF season is all about giving your eyes the right look at the right time. Accentuating one’s eyes at night with smoky and dark eye shadows while keeping a neutral or natural look during the day can really add to the diversity of eye makeup you choose to explore.

Day & Night Lips

Similar to the trends on eyes, the Lips are inversely complimenting to the eye makeup. This season the use of bright matt red lipsticks or neutral matt lipstick tones are in check. By day, give your lips a luscious red matt finish to compliment the neutral eye makeup. By night, neutralize the lips to give focus to the eyes. After all opposites attract!

Streak a Pose

You would expect the talk of color to be associated with the wardrobe; this Lakmé Fashion Week however took color all over. With Colorful Hair extensions clipped to sleak, chic and pulled back hairdos, braids and ponytails, it gave the models a funky yet sophisticated look. To avail this look Lakmé Salon offers hair extensions in a variety of new shades

11 Simple Travel Makeup And Skin Care Tips

11 Simple Travel Makeup And Skin Care Tips

Guest Post by Chetana

I’m sure we all love travelling to get a much needed break from the monotonous and hectic life. Looking good and beautiful can be quite challenging while travelling, as it can be quite stressful, whether you’re covering a short distance or jetting halfway around the world. This article helps you to look beautiful and fresh even while travelling. With these helpful tips, you can face your next vacation, business trip or a family homecoming with utmost confidence.

Makeup and Skin Care Tips:

1. It is very important to moisturize your face well before travelling. Apply an intense moisturizer a night before the trip. This keeps your skin well hydrated while facing the dehydrating elements like cabin pressure. Apply a gel based moisturizer instead of cream based moisturizer, before heading for the journey to avoid your skin from getting oily.

2. Skip the foundation. It is important to let your skin breath while travelling. Most importantly, you wouldn’t want makeup dripping from your face before landing or reaching your destination. You must have noticed that celebrities often opt for a complete no makeup look while travelling. You can wear a tinted moisturizer if you want. Carry a facial mist with yourself to freshen up the face.

3. Apply waterproof gel based eyeliner or pencil liner on the lids and avoid applying kohl as they might smudge while travelling.

4. Skip long lasting lipsticks. They might sound appealing for a long journey, but they dry out and leave the lips parched and dehydrated.  Lip stain is a better option than long lasting lipsticks. Layer your lips with several coats of lip stains, let it dry and then top it with a clear gloss. This will keep the lip moisturized and provides a colour at the same. Reapply the gloss for a freshly applied look. Or, you can also apply a lip treatment or lip butter during the journey to keep the lips hydrated.

5. Watching back to back movies on a long flight or constant reading can leave you with watery eyes. Carry eye drops with yourself to lubricate or soothe the eyes while watching movies or to refresh your eyes after waking up from a nap. Or carry pre moistened eye pads or gel eye masks to soothe and refresh eyes during flight.

6. Avoid wearing mascara for a long journey. It will leave you with panda eyes or trail down the cheeks after waking up from a sleep.

7. Carry some blotting papers or rice paper to blot excess oil from the skin. This way you can dab the shine and excess oil off your skin without striping off the moisture.

8. Avoid touching your face while travelling. Your hand attracts a lot of unknown bacteria while travelling which can lead to breakouts and other skin problems, even if you touch your face unknowingly. If you want to touch up while travelling, then wash your hands with an antibacterial soap before touching the face.

9. Skip bright nail paints while travelling and stick to neutral and nude nail paint shades, as bright nail paints chip easily. Nude nail paints do not chip much and even if they do, they are less likely to get detected when you’re wearing nude hue nail paint.

10. Apply a soft, peachy shade of blush to get a nice flushed looks. Avoid bright pink or red shades of blush and avoid applying eye shadow completely.

11. Apply a hand cream liberally throughout the trip to prevent your hands from drying out.

Makeup and Skin Care Essentials:

a. Invest in a travel or skin care kit to keep you skin in check and hydrated while travelling. Avoid washing your face and hands with hotel soap.

b. Face wipes are an absolute essential while travelling. It is extremely handy especially while travelling in buses where you don’t have a sink nearby. Facial wipes are extremely important in clearing the grime and dirt from your face.

c. You don’t need to lug around your entire vanity for regular touch ups. Carry a handy mini or travel makeup kit while travelling. An Inglot customized palette would be a good recommendation. You can store a blush pan, a powder pan and 3 round refill pans where you can store you eye shadow, lip colour and concealer.

d. Do not cram your makeup brushes into your luggage as it can leave you with bent bristles and broken handles. Even better, pack your brushes in a separate pencil case to avoid damage. There are travel makeup brushes available which you can stock for travelling purpose.

e. Carry your personal shower gel, shampoo and conditioner while travelling. All three of them are available in travel sizes so availability shouldn’t be a problem as such.

Neon lips can be worn either in a minimalist or bold fashion. If you seek a daring statement, opt for satin or matte lip shades that not only stay perky but also remain even and muted all day. Naturally Easy Ideas for People of All Ages to Appear Stunning

Naturally Easy Ideas for People of All Ages to Appear Stunning

Guest Post

Nature has provided the human race with all possible materials to maintain the beauty of mind and body. Beauty is only sustained or gained when one is healthy physically as well as mentally. Therefore, just using the suitable organic cosmetics is not enough to retain your natural beauty. You must also take care of your mind in a natural way so that a perfect balance is obtained between the body and mind. Therefore, along with taking care of skin, hair, nails, and eyes via natural cosmetics; an equal importance must be given to a balanced diet and relaxation strategies for proper body toning and mental boost. Let’s now take a look at different natural ways that can retain your overall beauty.

For Hair

A nutritious diet plays a big role in contributing to shiny and strong tresses. Because each hair strand is made up of protein, it makes sense to have a protein rich diet for obtaining strong and healthy hair. Apart from that, vitamins and minerals are also essential. Foods rich in Vitamin A and B such as mango, dried apricots, dark green leafy vegetables, and whole grain cereals promise healthy tresses. For combating dry scalp and dandruff, essential fatty acids and zinc are required. These nutrients are present adequately in nuts, pumpkin seeds, and vegetable oils (specified particularly for the vegetarians).

For Nails

Like hairs, even nails are made up of protein. This protein is known as keratin. Therefore, for making your nails look pink and smooth, it is vital to include all essential amino acids and vitamins in your daily diet. Many people are of the opinion that deficiency of calcium is the reason behind fragile nails. However, this is only a myth because calcium has no role in making the nails strong or in causing those white flecks that is mostly caused due to over manicuring or zinc deficiency. Calcium is required for making your teeth and bones healthy.

If your nails are shaped like a thin spoon, it marks the deficiency of iron and zinc. Therefore, you need to take foods such as green leafy vegetables, raisins, jaggery, and dried dates. For proper absorption of iron, Vitamin C is needed; which is richly present in citrus fruits. In addition, foods rich in zinc are ideal for treating fragile nails and infection present in the flanking skin. Having olive oil can also make your nails as well as tresses shine.

For Skin

Did you know that skin is the body’s biggest organ? Because it is the skin that makes one look charming, a majority of people crave for a healthy and beautiful skin. A simplest way to fulfill this desire is to drink plenty of water that moisturizes as well as softens the skin for making it healthy. Apart from water, Vitamin E is equally important for the skin and is present copiously in wheat germ, seeds, and nuts. It is especially useful for treating acne. At the same time, one must avoid all items high in sucrose, such as cakes, sweets, chocolates, and soft drinks. Further, refined and processed foods must be substituted with fresh fruits, whole grains, and vegetables. In addition, Vitamins A and C are essential for the proper development of the epithelial skin layers as well as for prevention of clogged up pores.

For Mind

Beauty is incomplete without a healthy mind. Therefore, you need to make your mind free from stress so that it remains happy for having a beautiful body. For this, you need to take enough rest and practice some relaxation strategies such as breathing exercises (pranayams) and poses (asanas) for proper maintenance of overall health. It is equally important to sleep for at eight hours to avoid stress or sleep disturbances.
